- Detoxification and stabilization is the first stage and it is not the treatment. Detox is only the preparation for treatment. Most detox programs are in facilities where medical care is available. Treatment involves medications, counseling, and rest to reduce the pain and discomfort of withdrawal symptoms. At least three to five days of intensive withdrawal programs are administered.
- Rehabilitation includes components to address the health and social problems associated with addictions. You can rehab in a specialty program that includes in-house care. There are forms of rehabilitation that can also be provided in outpatient settings. Medications are often used to relieve cravings for drugs and counseling is utilized for psychological addictions (gambling, sex).
- Continuing care can last for months or years following addiction treatment. The first 3-6 months is the time when patients relapse. Continuing care is designed to monitor the emotional health and remind the addicts of their commitment. Most continuing care exists in an out-patient clinic or office and always includes counseling, group and individual and partner therapy.
